CAAHEP & ABHES Accreditation
Perhaps the most-important thing to consider when comparing schools is the program’s accreditation status. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) are the national bodies responsible for the review and accreditation of surgical tech schools.
By attending an accredited school, you’ll be ensured of receiving training that prepares you for the all-important Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) and Certified Surgical First Assistant (CFSA) examinations. A passing score on these exams is required to earn your National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) certification.

Degree vs. Certificate
Degree or Certificate?
Another important consideration when choosing a program is the type of credential offered. The two types offered by surgical tech schools are associate’s degrees and certificates (referred to as diplomas by some programs).
Generally speaking, the associate degree path is tailored towards students interested in becoming surgical technologists, while certificate programs are for those who wish to become surgical technicians.
Associate of Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.) in Surgical Technology
As mentioned, you will need to pursue an associate degree if your career goal is to work as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST). Like most other associate degree programs, you will be required to commit to at least two years of schooling in order to earn your credential.
Certificates and Diplomas
Certificate and diploma programs are geared towards those who wish to enter the surgical assisting profession as technicians. An average of one year is usually required to finish these programs and, at the end of the training, students become eligible to test for certification.
Tuition & Financial Aid
Tuition & Financial Aid
A very real concern for most students nowadays is the price of their education. With this being the case, it is usually a good idea to find out which of the schools you are considering have financial aid programs to assist students with their tuition and other costs.
You may also want to consider applying for scholarships. Below we’ve listed some of the major ones for surgical technology students.
- NBSTSA Scholarship Program
- Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) Scholarship

In addition to those listed here, you may also want to talk to a representative from your school’s financial aid office in order to learn about other opportunities you may be qualified for.
